HISTORICAL NOTE
Clouds Hill Cottage is built on the site of a now
demolished bungalow originally leased to Arthur and
Henrietta Knowles from the Moreton Estate. When
Arthur Knowles died in 1931, his wife Henrietta continued
to look after T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) who
owned the cottage opposite. In order to help her
financially, Lawrence took over her Lease on the
bungalow at £12 per annum.

T E Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) came to Dorset in 1923
when he enlisted in the Tank Corps at Bovington Army
Camp as Trooper T E Shaw. The cottage that Lawrence
eventually occupied had originally been built by the
Moreton Estate in 1808 and Lawrence took over the Lease
when the property was being restored by Arthur Knowles.
Lawrence died from a motorbike accident in Dorset in
1935 and was buried at Moreton. The funeral was
attended by many dignitaries including Sir Winston
Churchill who was a personal friend.
